Two resilient dogs that survived a tragic plane crash last fall in New York’s Catskill Mountains have found loving homes, a heartwarming conclusion to a heartbreaking event. The crash, which claimed the life of dedicated rescue pilot Seuk Kim, was a somber reminder of the risks taken to save animals in need.
The Crash and Rescue Mission
On November 24, 2024, Seuk Kim, a volunteer pilot from Springfield, Virginia, was flying three dogs from overcrowded shelters to a rescue organization in Albany, New York. His mission was part of his ongoing efforts to save animals from disaster-stricken areas and shelters in need. Tragically, Kim’s 1986 Mooney M20J aircraft crashed while flying over the Catskill Mountains. Kim had reported hitting moderate to heavy turbulence at 5,000 feet but was able to descend to 4,300 feet before losing contact with air traffic control. Sadly, no distress calls were made before the crash occurred.
The Survivor Story
Two of the dogs on board survived the crash: a 6-month-old Labrador mix named Whiskey and a young Yorkshire terrier mix named Pluto. While the pilot tragically lost his life, the two dogs’ journey was far from over.
Whiskey, who was found with two broken legs and severe bruising, was rushed to Pieper Memorial Veterinary Hospital in Middletown, Connecticut, where he underwent surgeries and physical therapy. After months of recovery, Whiskey is now walking and playing again in his foster home, where the family decided to adopt him permanently. Whiskey’s recovery journey is a testament to resilience and the incredible care he received from his rescuers.
Pluto, who sustained internal bruising, recovered quickly and was adopted into a home in Averill Park, New York, just a few weeks after the crash. Both dogs’ recovery and eventual adoptions serve as a reminder of the strength of these animals and the dedication of those who work tirelessly to save them.

A Legacy of Hope and Honor
While the loss of Seuk Kim is felt deeply by his friends, family, and the animal rescue community, his legacy continues through the work of his fellow rescue pilots and volunteers. A new organization is being formed to honor his life and work, with plans to sponsor mobile spay and neuter clinics, as well as create pet food pantries—a project that Kim and his children had started prior to his passing.
Maggie Jackman Pryor, Executive Director of the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley, where the two surviving dogs were taken, expressed her gratitude for the outpouring of support for the dogs. She noted that while people from across the country showed interest in adopting the dogs, there are so many animals in need at local shelters that should not be overlooked.
“These two dogs are amazing, but there are so many amazing dogs in shelters, too,” said Pryor. “We always encourage people to check their local shelters first and consider adopting there.”

Continuing the Mission
The story of Whiskey and Pluto is just one chapter in a larger movement driven by volunteers and rescue organizations working to save lives every day. While Kim’s death was a tragic loss, his passion for animal rescue lives on through the efforts of those who continue the work he started.
